I just find it harder to discover a great movie in recent years; but this November seems more interesting.

Astro Boy

Set in futuristic Metro City, Astro Boy is about a young robot with incredible powers created by a brilliant scientist in the image of the son he has lost. Unable to fulfill the grieving man’s expectations, our hero embarks on a journey in search of acceptance, experiencing betrayal and a netherworld of robot gladiators, before he returns to save Metro City and reconcile with the father who had rejected him. Enjoy the trailer:

Vengeance (Chinese)

French icon Johnny Hallyday plays a man with a score to settle in “Vengeance”, starring Silvie Testud as his daughter and Johnny To’s favourite band of actors – Anthony Wong, Lam Ka Tung, Lam Suet and Simon Yam. As Costello, the French actor is a chef on paper but an assassin in disguise. Watch Vengeance trailer:

Saw 6

Saw is one of my favorite movies. Hope the sixth won’t disappoint me. Special Agent Strahm is dead, and Detective Hoffman has emerged as the unchallenged successor to Jigsaw’s legacy. However, when the FBI draws closer to Hoffman, he is forced to set a game into motion, and Jigsaw’s grand scheme is finally understood. Watch Saw VI trailer:

Merantau (Indonesian)

In Minangkabau, West Sumatra, Yuda a skilled practitioner of Silat Harimau is in the final preparations to begin his ‘merantau,’ a century’s old rites of passage carried out by the community’s young men which will see him leave the comforts of his village and make a name for him in the bustling city of Jakarta. After a series of setbacks, Yuda is left homeless and uncertain about his new future. Later on, he encounters an orphan named Astri and protects him from becoming a victim of a European human trafficking ring led by Ratger and his right-hand man Luc. With Ratger injured in the melee, he seeks both the boy and bloody retribution. Yuda is then forced to go on the run with Astri and her younger brother Adit. In the end, he has no choice but to face his attackers in an adrenaline charged finale.

Capitalism: A Love Story

The film explores the root causes of global economic meltdown and takes a comical look at the corporate and political shenanigans that culminated in what Michael Moore has described as “the biggest robbery in the history of this country” – the massive transfer of U.S. taxpayer money to private financial institutions.

My Girlfriend Is An Agent (Korean)

A Russian organised crime group is set out to steal an advanced chemical weapon from Korea and two secret agents are out to stop them. One is a veteran secret agent named Ahn Soo-ji who is a master of all forms of martial arts and envied by her comrades. Another is a rookie named Lee Jae-joon who’s never been out on the field and always goofs up on the job. The two agents don’t know each other’s secret identity. All that they know is that they hate each other.

As a couple that is… Soo-ji and Jae-joon were once a passionate couple until Jae-joon couldn’t take her lies anymore. But all Soo-ji was trying to do was hide her secret identity. Nonetheless, the two went on their separate ways and by coincidence bump into each other years later while out on the job. As the two work out their screwy relationship, they go behind each other’s backs to fulfil their mission to save the world.

Hump Day Plot & Trailer

When Andrew unexpectedly shows up on Ben’s doorstep late one night, the two old college friends immediately fall into their old dynamic of heterosexual one-upmanship. To save Ben from domestication, Andrew invites Ben to a party at a sex-positive commune. Everyone there plans on making erotic art films for the local amateur porn festival and Andrew wants to be part of it. They run out of booze and ideas except one: Andrew should have sex with Ben, on camera for the sake of art.

City Of Men Plot & Trailer

“City Of Men” follows two central characters, best friends Ace (Douglas Silva) and Wallace (Darlan Cunha), as they are unwittingly caught up in a vicious gang war in their dilapidated favela. Ace struggles with his newfound responsibilities as a young father while Wallace searches for his errant father.

Meanwhile, a brutal turf war breaks out around them, and Ace is reluctantly swept up into one of the gangs after threats on his life leave him with little choice but to join in the mayhem.

2012 Plot & Intro

One of the most anticipated movies in November. An epic adventure about a global cataclysm that brings an end to the world and tells of the heroic struggle of the survivors.

Paranormal Activity Plot & Trailer

A young couple suspects that their house is haunted by a malevolent entity. They set up video surveillance to capture evidence of what happens at night as they sleep.

Amelia Plot & Trailer

After becoming the first woman to fly across the Atlantic, Amelia was thrust into a new role as America’s sweetheart – the legendary “goddess of light,” known for her bold, larger-than-life charisma. Yet, even with her global fame solidified, her belief in flirting with danger and standing up as her own has never changed.

In the summer of 1937, Amelia set off on her most daunting mission yet – a solo flight around the world, which became one of the most talked-about journeys in history.

My One And Only

Set in the 1950s, the comedy focuses on the glamorous Anne Deveraux as she drives down the Eastern seaboard from city to city in a quixotic search for a wealthy man to fund a new life for her and her sons. The film is based on a true story about George Hamilton’s early life on the road with his mother and brother.

Fantastic Mr Fox Plot & Trailer

This adaptation of the Roald Dahl children’s classic is Wes Anderson’s first foray into animation. Mr and Mrs Fox live under a tree with their babies, along with Badger, Rabbit, Weasel, and all of their families as well. To make ends meet, every night, Mr Fox steals a meal from one of the three crooked farmers – Boggis, Bunce and Bean. Soon, the dim-witted but very mean farmers band together to put an end to Mr. Fox.

The Informant

Based on journalist Kurt Eichenwald’s 2000 novel, “The Informant” is a dark comedy thriller that revisits one of the biggest conspiracies ever in America. In this movie, the U.S. government decides to go after an agri-business giant with a price-fixing accusation, based on the evidence submitted by their star witness, vice president turned informant Mark Whitacre.

A Christmas Carol

Charles Dickens’ timeless tale of an old miser who must face the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet-to-Come, as they help bring kindness to his otherwise cold heart. The Ghosts remind him of the man he used to be, the hard truth of what the world is today, and what will happen if he does not strive to be a better man. Set around Christmas, the most joyous day of the year, Scrooge realizes the sharp contrast of his own personality.

Jim Carrey plays four separate roles in this updated version of “A Christmas Carol.” Carrey portrays Scrooge, as well as the three ghosts (Past, Present, and Yet-to-Come). Robert Zemeckis (“Back to the Future” trilogy) has his chance to dabble in telling a story through the windows of time, as he directs the long-awaited remake.

Raging Phoenix (Thai)

Deu (JeeJa Yanin), a girl with equally high degree of recklessness and beauty has never experienced ‘true love’. One day her life changes completely when some gangsters try to kidnap her and she narrowly escapes with the help of Sanim, a sad looking stranger with a painful past.

Waking up in an abandoned factory, she joins his gang of merry do-gooders who practice a form of drunken Thai break-dancing martial arts that they dub Meyraiyuth. Sanim and his friends, having had loved ones abducted, have joined together to break the gang of kidnappers.

Case 39

Emily thinks she has seen it all until she meets her newest, most mysterious case – a troubled 10-year-old Lillith Sullivan (Jodelle Ferland). Emily’s worst fears are confirmed when the parents try to kill Lillith, their only daughter. Emily saves her and decides to take her herself until the right foster family comes along. However, the situation soon escalates into danger.

Ninja Assassin

Raizo (Rain) is one of the deadliest assassins in the world. Taken from the streets as a child, he was transformed into a trained killer by the Ozunu Clan, a secret society whose very existence is considered a myth. Haunted by the execution of his friend by the Clan, Raizo breaks free from them and prepares to exact his revenge.

In Berlin, Europol agent Mika Coretti (Naomie Harris) has stumbled upon a money trail linking several political murders to an underground network of untraceable assassins from the Far East. Mika digs into top-secret agency files to learn the truth behind the murders.

Her investigation makes her a target, and the Ozunu Clan sends a team of killers, led by the lethal Takeshi (Rick Yune) to silence her forever. Raizo saves Mika from her attackers and must now trust each other to survive and bring down the elusive Ozunu Clan.

An Education

Jenny (Carey Mulligan) is a bright 17-year-old girl who finds herself in a whirlwind romance with a much older David (Peter Sarsgaard).

Prior to meeting David, Jenny was trying to excel in her life by going through prep school to get into Oxford. However, once she sees the lifestyle David can provide, she is hooked and thoughts of Oxford goes out the window.

Then, when things are looking pretty good for Jenny with the dashing David, the truth hits her like a ton of bricks. Jenny goes from being a bright eyed school girl to a sophisticated young lady and then all the way back to questioning if she really knows who she is at all.

Mao’s Last Dancer

A drama based on the autobiography by Li Cunxin.

At the age of 11, Li was plucked from a poor Chinese village by Madame Mao’s cultural delegates and is taken to Beijing to study ballet. In 1979, during a cultural exchange to Texas, he fell in love with an American woman.

Two years later, he managed to defect and went on to perform as a principal dancer for the Houston Ballet and as a principal artist with the Australian Ballet.
