“By air” is not the only option! It’s fun to take train while traveling outside Singapore. When you are in Thailand for example, you can take train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai which saves money as well.

State Railway of Thailand has set up a online reservation website for  booking train tickets in Thailand. Train tickets online booking can be done between 00:30 – 23:30 (Thailand Time) at

SRT has launched trail online booking for the following routes:

  • Northern : Bangkok – Chiangmai
  • North-Eastern : Bangkok – Ubon Ratchathani, Bangkok – Nong Khai
  • Southern : Bangkok – Trang, Bangkok – Nakhonsithammarat, Bankok – Surat Thani, Bangkok – Hatyai, Bangkok –Sungai Kolok

Booking is open for 1st Class A/C and 2nd Class A/C in Special Express and Express trains.

Also remember that your departure must be at least in 2 hours but not exceeding 60 days. And, you can make online tickets booking for a total of four passengers. Once you conduct a search, you will see available trains:

It takes 12-15 hours from Bangkok to Chiangmai by train; yes, much slower than flight. But, the experience could be unforgettable especially if you travel with friends.

Internet booking fee for train tickets is 20.00 Baht/passenger and credit card processing surcharge is 3% of the total amount. The cost of one first class train ticket from Bangkok to Chiangmai is less than 1300 Baht (50+ SGD); second class one costs about 791 Baht (SGD$33).
