Singapore 2010 Odyssey is the first 3D virtual world based on the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games to be held in August 2010.

One interesting feature is that many of the games are multi-player competitions organized as in-world events. Rather than rankings based on general points, though those are possible, users will compete together in events like archery, hurdles, and swimming.

Users also have the opportunity to design their own 3D content. Singapore 2010 Odyssey is pushing that program specifically through schools. So far students from NUS High, Nan Hua Secondary, and Hai Sing Catholic have piloted the program to create in-world content, but it will be rolled out to other schools in the coming months.

Currently Singapore 2010 Odyssey is only available for PC.

NLB has launched NewspaperSG website where you can search digital archive of newspapers published between 1831-2006 or find information on over 200 newspaper titles in the National Library’s microfilm collection.

NewspaperSG is an online resource of current and historic Singapore and Malaya newspapers. You can also preview some issues of upcoming newspapers that will be available in NewspaperSG.

If you do not get many results, you may choose to do a fuzzy search instead. Fuzzy searching will find a word even if it is misspelled. It can be very useful when searching text generated using OCR software, as there are varying levels of accuracy depending on the quality of the original newspaper or microfilm. For example, a fuzzy search for singapore will find sincapore or sinoapore.

You can get an un-watermarked copy of the newspaper article from the multimedia stations at NLB libraries. Prints are charged at $1.00 per A4 page.

Home users will not be able to view articles from third-party news sources (such as Reuters, AFP and AP) that are published during the last 70 years. Users are also unable to view Straits Times articles published after 1989.

You can also find online archives of current Singapore newspapers in databases subscribed by the library. To access these databases, go to NLB eResources look for “Browse By Type”, and click on “eNewspapers”. You may wish to note that access to the Singapore newspapers in these databases is only available to patrons using the multimedia media stations at NLB libraries or the NLB-PUBLIC network at the National Library Building.

2009 in Singapore saw people really loving their leisure time, with an increased number using Google to search for holidays, new shopping malls and sporting events.

The fastest-rising serached terms ranged from the latest properties to Michael Jackson’s untimely demise. It was also no surprise that local celebrities like Jamie Yeo and Joshua Ang ruled the blogosphere, while new shopping malls like Ion Orchard and Tampines 1 are changing Singaporeans’ definition of ‘mega’.

Sports were of great interest as well, with the F1 night race making its second year debut last September, and marathons like the Adidas Sundown and Standard Chartered Marathon getting their share of interested participants. Google Street View has arrived in Singapore! We are the first in Southeast Asia to have a virtual street guide based on photographs.

Google Street View is currently available in United States, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, France, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Canada, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand.

Google Street View camera cars were spotted in the streets of Singapore in October 2008. The technology by Google allows users to view and navigate 360-degree street-level imagery, including the country’s most iconic sights.

In areas where Street View is available, you can access street-level imagery by zooming into the lowest level on Google Maps, or by dragging the orange “Pegman” icon on the left-hand side of the map onto a blue highlighted street.

You can check out a restaurant before arriving, make travel plans, arrange meeting points, get a helping hand with geography homework, or just explore and get to know Singapore better. The coolest way to use Street View is on smartphones so users can do all of this fun stuff on-the-go, anytime, anywhere.

Any user can easily flag images for removal that he or she considers inappropriate by clicking on “Report a problem” on Google Street View Singapore. But,  faces and licence plates are blurred out in Google Street View Singapore, and one can see what already is visible on public roads. Isn’t that interesting to see faces? Disappointed?

How to Use Google Street View Singapore

1. Navigate to your desired location
2. To view street-level imagery for a specific location, click and drag the icon (on top of zoom bar) to the location you want. Roads with street-level imagery available appear with a blue border.
3. A street-level view appears for this location with an overview map in the bottom right corner of the view. A movable Pegman icon appears in the overview map.

YouTube EDU channel was launched this March, a volunteer project sparked by a group of employees who wanted to find a better way to collect and highlight all the great educational content being uploaded to YouTube by colleges and universities.

YouTube EDU is aggregating videos from dozens of colleges and universities, ranging from lectures to student films to athletic events. Some of this stuff is solid gold (the Stanford and MIT lectures are really good). Other content, not so interesting.

YouTube Edu lets viewers sort clips by school or number of views, and the schools offer content ranging from complete courses to campus events to information for prospective students.

When you are bored at home, learn something you really enjoy at this YouTube education channel. One is never too old to learn!

Leveraging on new social media platforms and taking advantage of the popularity of computer gaming, the National Environment Agency (NEA) has developed an internet-based game, termed “Operation M.A.C.E” (Monster Annihilation and Control Enforcement).

This is a first-of-its-kind outreach programme that promotes dengue awareness among the young and the internet savvy.

Operation M.A.C.E was launched today at the annual Clean & Green Singapore (CGS) Schools’ Carnival by Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Dr Amy Khor.

Operation M.A.C.E builds upon a story that is set in a futuristic Singapore that has been invaded by a race of aliens resembling Aedes mosquitoes. Known as Mosqueros, they invade planets for food and breeding sources. To deal with this threat, a M.A.C.E agency is set up where M.A.C.E agents are sent out to eliminate the monsters by depriving them of food sources and sweeping out all possible breeding grounds.

To play the game, Internet users can log on to www.macecommand.com.sg and sign up as M.A.C.E agents. NEA hopes that through such role-playing games, the youth will be more engaged and internalize the dengue prevention messages. In turn, they can help to remind their parents and family members to take action in preventing mosquito breeding.

Users will also be able to download videos, wallpapers, screensavers, web and mobile games from the Operation M.A.C.E website, as well as view action-packed video trailers on platforms such as YouTube.
