Next Monday is the last day for making claims and objections to rectify any errors in the Registers. So check your name in Registers of Electors by that date.

About Register of Electors

A register of electors is a list of all qualified electors belonging to the electoral division that the register relates to. There is one register for each electoral division.

The registers of electors are compiled from records kept by the National Registration Office by applying the eligibility requirements as on a cut-off date in accordance with section 5 of the Parliamentary Elections Act (Cap. 218).

The eligibility requirements are:

• Citizenship : Must be a citizen of Singapore (holder of pink NRIC);
• Age : Must not be less than 21 years of age; and
• Residence : Must be ordinarily resident in Singapore.

Bloom Energy are producing tiny fuel cell boxes they call “Bloom Boxes.” Two small bloom boxes (each device isn’t much bigger than a standard brick) can power a U.S. home (and only one for homes in countries that use less power).

NETS launched iNETS for wireless payment. Pay your utilities, credit card or phone bills, buy movie tickets, pay for season parking…using iNETS with your mobile phone or iNETS kiosk.

NETS is hoping to make wireless payments more accessible with the launch of iNets, which allows people to pay for things through iNets kiosks at MRT stations or their mobile phones with a downloaded application.

For now, 15 iNETS service providers including SingTel, StarHub, UOB, OCBC, Cathay Cineplexes and SP Services are tapping the system, and Nets is looking to get more merchants’ support.

Things that users could soon pay for via iNets include airline tickets and tours, food and beverage, motoring services, prepaid top-ups, and e-books.

iNETs service could even be extended to ATM and cable television set-top boxes in the future.

If you (Singapore citizens) have recently entered Malaysia at least 4 times in a month, you can apply for a special MACS pass which allows clearance through either Woodlands or Tuas checkpoint without having to fill up the white immigration card.

With the Malaysia Automated Clearance System (MACS) pass – a sticker embedded with a Radio Frequency Identification chip that is stuck in the passport, you can zip through immigration clearance in Malaysia without worrying if their passport has been stamped.

The scope of MACS facility is expanded to Singapore Citizens who has
been issued with the relevant long term immigration pass and
frequently travel within Malaysia and Singapore for the purpose of
working, studying and staying in Malaysia.

MACS pass costs RM30 (S$12.50) and is valid for one year. Spouses and children of frequent travellers can also apply for the pass.

How to Apply for MACS Pass

Application forms are available online at Immigration Malaysia’s web site
at www.imi.gov.my and at Iskandar Malaysia’ s web site at
www.iskandarmalaysia.com.my (only for applicants involved in Iskandar
Malaysia). Hardcopy forms can also be obtained at the MACS One Stop
Center (OSC).

Completed application forms must be printed, verified by the Malaysian
sponsor and endorsed by the IRDA representative (only applicable for
MACS – Iskandar Malaysia applicant).

Submission of application forms (and relevant supporting documents)
shall be made to the respective MACS One Stop Center. MACS –
Iskandar Malaysia applicants are required to submit the completed
application forms at IRDA’s office.

Applicants are required to be self-present during application process.

From 1 Feb 2010, flat owners who sub-let rooms in their HDB flats will have to register with HDB within 7 days of doing so.

They are also required to notify HDB when they renew or terminate the subletting of rooms, and when there are changes to their sub-tenants’ particulars. There is no need to seek prior approval for subletting of rooms.

Why Subletting HDB Flats Requires Registration?

The new requirement will support the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA)’s on-going efforts to eradicate loan-sharking activities, and to better protect HDB residents.

Currently, some people use their old addresses to borrow from loan-sharks while they rent a room in another HDB flat. As they have moved their place of residence without updating addresses in their NRICs, this resulted in the new flat occupiers being harassed by the loan-sharks while the borrowers are untraceable.

Through this new rule, HDB will be able to capture the particulars of those who rent rooms in HDB flats. With information on the addresses of owners and sub-tenants, MHA will be able to trace the movements of borrowers.

HDB Subletting Registration

The new rule will apply to all new and existing cases of room sublets:

• For the existing cases where the subletting tenancies commenced before 1 Feb 2010, owners are given a 6-month grace period from 1 Feb 2010 to register their sub-letting of rooms with HDB
• For new cases of sub-letting from 1 Feb 2010, owners will have to register with HDB within 7 days from the start date of the subletting

To facilitate registration, flat owners may either register their subletting of rooms online or at the Branch Office, where HDB staff will be on hand to guide them on the registration process.

Flat owners will be required to provide only essential information shown in Annex A.

Penalty If HDB Subletting Not Registered

A penalty of up to $3,000 will be imposed on those who sublets HDB flats and does not register. HDB may compulsorily acquire the flats of flat owners who repeatedly fail to comply with the new requirement.

Apart from this new rule, there is no change to the other terms and conditions for sub-letting of rooms as shown in Annex B.

According to Straits Times, the report by the International Labor Organization put Singapore workers at the top of 13 economies in the group’s Global Wages Report for 2008-09.

A check with Singapore’s Manpower Ministry put working hours in Singapore at 45.9 hours a week for 2008 and for the first quarter of last year. In 2007, it was 46.3 hours.

Under the Employment Act, the limit on working hours is 44 hours a week or eight hours a day. Beyond this, workers are entitled to 1.5 times their hourly rate of pay.

HDB is launching two new BTO projects today, Limbang Green in Choa Chu Kang and Buangkok Vale in Hougang, offering a total of 1,291 standard flats.
