It also inspired Tanabata (aka. Shichiseki [七夕]) in Japan, Chilseok (칠석) in Korea, and vi:Thất Tịch in Vietnam.

Young girls traditionally demonstrate their domestic arts, especially melon carving, on this day and make wishes for a good husband.

Read the story behind Chinese Valentine’s Day here.

Qixi / Chinese Valentine’s Day Traditions

On Qi Xi, a festoon is placed in the yard and the single or newly married women in the household make an offering to Niulang and Zhinü consisting of fruit, flowers, tea, and facial powder (makeup). After finishing the offering, half of the facial powder is thrown on the roof and the other half divided among the young women of the household. It is believed that by doing this, the women are bound in beauty with Zhinü.

Another tradition is for young girls to throw a sewing needle into a bowl full of water on the night of Qi Xi as a test of embroidery skills. If the needle floats on top of the water instead of sinking, it proves the girl is a skilled embroideress.

Woodlands waterfront was launched on Sunday May 23 2010 a new leisure destination in the north.

The playgroud with unique two storey high bridges made of meshed rope, called a “skywald” and a stationary skating system which even adults can use. Although only one-third of the park area has been opened, the URA (Urban Redevelopment Authority) said the main features are already in place.

The Woodlands Waterfront will also add on to 1.5km of the 150km-Round Island Route, which allows seamless strolling, jogging or cycling around Singapore. Vistors can enjoy a view of Johor Baru from a lookout point in the park and participate in community activities at the event plaza.

When fully completed, the remaining six hectares will include a Cantilevered Promenade, nature area, trails and green spaces and the Woodlands Waterfront will be linked to the nearby Admiralty Park and the park connector along Woodlands Centre Road and Admiralty West, which by 2015.

A waterfront attraction for multi-generational bonding

Once a laid-back coastal area occupied by warehouses, the area now offers a variety of recreational opportunities for people of all ages that is conducive for multi-generational bonding. Residents in the north can wind down after a hard day’s work and enjoy a stroll along the waterfront promenade to take in the beautiful sea view, or have a picnic by the lush green park beside the promenade. Fitness buffs can jog along the refurbished jetty and catch spectacular view of the sunrise; or simply enjoy some bonding time with family during the sunset hours.

A breezy stroll at the jetty

Overlooking the Straits of Johor, the refurbished jetty is one of the longest in Singapore, measuring about 400m long and about 12m wide. It can accommodate a wide range of activities such as roller blading, sports activities such as jogging, and various community events such as bazaars. An old shed with a pulley system along the jetty has been converted into a sheltered rest point, giving visitors a glimpse into the past when it was a working jetty.

An event plaza for mass activities

Adjacent to the jetty by the sea is an event plaza. Large-scale community events, such as mass exercise, line dancing or cultural performances can be held at the plaza. From the lookout point at the rooftop of the amenity building by the plaza, visitors can soak in the panoramic views of the waterfront across the Straits of Johor.

A playground that bonds the community

The playground is equipped with various facilities and fitness equipment for residents of all age groups to interact, and is conducive for inter-generational bonding. The adventurous and the young-at-heart will be fascinated by the two-storey high Sky Walk, an attraction that is the first of its kind in Singapore. Adventurous visitors can enjoy this self-contained ‘meshed bridge’ system, crawling from one tree pod to another.

Phase 2 of Woodlands Waterfront will be completed and opened in the second half of the year. When fully completed, the entire Woodlands Waterfront will be a 1.5km long waterfront promenade, which includes a 9-hectare coastal park to support a variety of recreational activities and community events. It will also be linked to Admiralty Park and the park connector along Woodlands Centre Road and Admiralty Road West in future.

Getting to Woodlands Waterfront

Location of Woodlands Waterfront lies slightly north to the junction of Admiralty Road and Admiralty Road West. Members of the public can take bus service 856 which stops at Admiralty Road and walk the remaining distance to the coastal promenade and park, or drive and park at the Woodlands Waterfront carpark.

Couples preparing for their weddings are now able to obtain comprehensive information on not just traditional wedding customs, but also on how to design an environmentally-friendly wedding and home through a new guidebook that was launched by Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong at the Geylang Serai Town Day today.

Entitled “My Green Wedding and My Green Home”, the guidebook was initiated by the National Environment Agency (NEA) and supported by the Geylang Serai Constituency, Marine Parade Town Council and South East Community Development Council.

It aims to provide practical advice and encourage soon-to-be married and newly-weds to make environmentally-friendly choices when planning their weddings, and adopt energy saving measures in their new homes.
The first part of the guidebook provides explanations on traditional wedding customs such as Guo Da Li (过大礼), An Chuang (安床) and Shu Tou (梳头), as well as tips on how couples can be environmentally-friendly in the selection of their wedding rings , venue, catering, flowers and even the wedding gown .

The second part of the guidebook contains information on setting up an energy efficient home. This includes tips on how to choose energy efficient appliances like air-conditioners, washing machines and pressure cookers, as well as how to use them in an energy efficient manner. For example, pressure cookers can not only save energy but also reduce cooking time by up to two thirds. This could help a household reduce electricity consumption by 50-75%.

For a start, 10,000 copies of the guidebook have been produced and they will be distributed at selected Poh Heng Jewellery outlets, libraries and town councils in the South East District on a complimentary basis.

HDB is launching two new BTO projects- Boon Lay Grove in Jurong West and Floral Spring in Yishun.

A total of 1,050 flats will be offered, comprising 96 units of Studio Apartments (SA), 564 units of 4-room and 390 units of 5-room flats. 95% of the public supply of 4- and 5-room flats will be set aside for First-Timers.

With today’s launch at Boon Lay Grove and Floral Spring @ Yishun, HDB would have offered for sale to the public a total of 6,132 new BTO flats in the first five months of this year.

BOON LAY GROVE

Boon Lay Grove will have 450 standard flats, comprising 300 units of 4-room and 150 units of 5-room flats. Located along Jurong West Avenue 2, it is well served by a wide spectrum of facilities at the established Boon Lay estate, such as the Boon Lay Shopping Centre, Boon Lay Community Centre, neighbourhood park and schools. The Pan-Island Expressway is also a short 5 minutes drive away.

The selling prices for the flats range from:

$239,000 to $287,000 for a 4-room flat; and

$298,000 to $358,000 for a 5-room flat

FLORAL SPRING @ YISHUN

Floral Spring @ Yishun will have 600 standard flats, comprising 96 units of Studio Apartments, 264 units of 4-room and 240 units of 5-room flats. This development, located along Yishun Avenue 11, is well served by nearby facilities such as an HDB neighbourhood centre, a neighbourhood park and schools.

The selling prices for the flats range from:

$64,000 to $84,000 for a Studio Apartment;

$219,000 to $262,000 for a 4-room flat; and

$289,000 to $332,000 for a 5-room flat

In addition to the subsidised selling price, eligible first-timers with a monthly household income of $5,000 or less can also apply for the Additional CPF Housing Grant (AHG) of up to $40,000. The AHG can be used to offset the initial down-payment.

First-time flat buyers are estimated to use 20% to 23% of their monthly household income to meet their monthly loan payments for flats in Boon Lay Grove and Floral Spring @ Yishun (details are in Annex B (PDF 42KB)). This is well below international affordability benchmarks of 30% – 35%. A 4-room unit priced at $240,000 in Floral Spring @ Yishun requires a monthly mortgage instalment of about $865. A family with a household income of $4,200 will be able to service this mortgage instalment using their CPF contributions without requiring any cash outlay.

With effect from Mar 2010, first-timer households comprising a Singapore Citizen (SC) and a Singapore Permanent Resident (SPR), i.e. SC/SPR households, will be required to pay a premium of $10,000 on top of HDB’s selling price.

This withheld subsidy will be restored when the SPR family member takes up citizenship or if the couple has an SC child while still in ownership of that flat. Eligible households can apply to HDB within 6 months of the change in household citizenship status to claim the $10,000 Citizen Top-Up via CPF.
