Remember the father getting his little son Jeff to happily do the chores assigned to him? Jeff was told to pick fallen pears from the pear tree so the mowing machine would not get stuck. He didn’t like the chore and did it very badly. The father was frustrated every time he had to pick up pears when mowing.
One day, the father said, “Jeff, I’ll make a deal with you. For every basket full of pears you pick up, I’ll pay you $1. But after you are finished, for every pear I find left in the yard, I’ll take away a dollar.” Guess what, after that the father had to keep an eye on him to see that he didn’t pull a few off the trees to fill up baskets.
This week, let’s remember to try a Jar (i.e. consequences for every left-over pear) with positive incentive when things are just not getting done.
Bonus: Do you think you will make money or lose money with such a system?
