Millions of people were infected with this human parasite due to dirty drinking water. Victims suffered horrific pains. Instead of focusing on the massive failure of the authorities in the 3rd world to supply clean drinking water, Dr. Hopkins employed a ‘positive deviance’ approach. He identified two villages in Africa that were free of this worm – and studied them. The insight was surprisingly simple. Instead of chemical or advanced technologies, in these villages women were pouring dirty water through their skirts and thus effectively filtering the worms.
By recommending this simple, zero-cost, behavior change; Dr. Hopkins saved millions of lives and eventually eradicated these worms completely.
This week, let’s focus on learning from the unique cases of success amidst the many failures.
