If you are traveling to Myanmar this month, please note from 12 to 21st of April it’s Gazetted Official Public holidays “Myanmar Thingyan 2011” in Myanmar.
Myanmar Thingyan Festival or the Water Festival preceding the Burmese New Year is the most celebrated festival in Myanmar. It is wreathed with fantastic tales and folklore, but Buddhist in spirit. People keep fast, give alms and do good deeds. There is goodwill and loving-kindness all around.
The Padauk blossoms which are the symbolic flowers of Thingyan, can be seen everywhere. Thingyan is also the season of giving and people give away seasonal snacks to the revelers. This is the true spirit of the season.
At the Burmese Buddhist Temple in Singapore, celebration of water festival was held on April 10 (Sunday). I was at the Temple to witness the joyous celebration among fellow Burmese.
