Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui/ Antony Gormley/ Monks from the Shaolin Temple (Belgium/UK/China)
Acclaimed Flemish/Moroccan choreographer Sidi Lari Cherkaoui presents a brand new dance work inspired by the skill, strength and spirituality of Buddhist Shaolin monks. As the monks from Henan, China, climb, jump, backflip, hide and mediate within and around life-sized wooden boxes, the sublime cultural blend of the East-West comes to the fore.
Discovered and mentored by famed choreographer Alain Platel, Sidi Larbi Cherakaoui’s choreography works for Les Ballets C. de la B include Rien de Rien, which won him the Promising Choreograph prize at the Nijinski Awards, as well as Foi and Tempus Fugit, commissioned by Festival d’Avignon. In 2005, he and fellow choreographer Akram Khan created and danced Zero Degrees which won two Helpmann Awards. Larbi has also collaborated with Les Ballets de Monte Carlo, Ballet du Grand Théatre de Genève and Cullberg Ballet.
