Swensen’s now uses healthy palm sugar from Cambodian producers in two of Swensens’ ice-cream flavors, Chendol and Palm Fruit, as well as sundaes, Chendol Delight and Palm Paradise.
Because of the lack of natural resources and the lack of a more developed industrial
base in Cambodia, agriculture is the key sector in the economy. Swensens’ move helps contribute to the export of palm sugar, thus improving the livelihoods of and creating sustained employment for palm sugar farmers in Cambodia.
Currently, pint-sized tubs of chendol and palm fruit ice-cream flavors are available at $7.90 each. other flavors at Swensen’s are retailed at $10.80 each.
Chendol and palm fruit flavors are also used in two of Swensens’ sundaes. Palm Paradise ($6.90) presents scoops of rich Palm Fruit ice-cream served with peaches, nata de coco and topped with palm sugar syrup and desiccated coconut. The Chendol Delight ($8.50) comes served with bountiful scoops of chendol ice cream smothered in palm sugar syrup, served with a generous serving of red bean, chendol jelly and palm fruits.
