The new Best Eight, both natural and man-made, represent Shanghai’s culture, history and development. They were picked by more than 33,700 people from all walks of life.
More than 300 scenic areas were recommended. The administration released a bilingual book last month to introduce the eight spots and 100 other candidates that did not make the final cut.

China National Day 2009 is a big celebration in China and people will celebrate 60 years of Communist Party rule tomorrow with a massive military parade passing by Tiananmen Square in central Beijing, where Mao Zedong proclaimed the People’s Republic on October 1, 1949.
This year, it will be more on hardware designed to show China’s modernization and military strength. Soldiers will march at an exact pace of 116 steps a minute in China’s National Day Parade and it will take each column one minute and six seconds to march past the top leaders at the main podium. Amazing, huh?
The government has issued nearly 1 million coupons to encourage people in the capital to watch patriotic films over the period to “create the proper atmosphere” for National Day. Beijing’s international airport will close for three hours on the morning of October 1 for security concerns.

China performs about 13 million abortions every year, mostly for single young women who experts say know little about contraception, state media said Thursday in a rare disclosure of sensitive family planning statistics.
Singapore is among 54 countries – including US – where an abortion can be performed regardless of reason, according to the US-based non-profit group, Centre for Reproductive Rights. This site lists the number of abortions reported from 1970 to 2006; it’s going down. There were 12,032 abortions reported in year 2006.
