A key part of the Remaking Our Heartland plans is the creation of an exciting, fun-filled waterway to realize the vision for Punggol as a waterfront town. The plans were first announced by the Prime Minister at National Day Rally in Aug 2007. HDB has launched more than 4,000 flats in Punggol in 2008. Works are set to begin for the waterway as HDB has awarded the construction of Punggol Waterway (Part 1) to Koh Brothers Building & Civil Engineering Contractor (Pte) Ltd at $144.6 million.
The contract includes the construction of the 2.4 kilometre waterway and its related engineering works in Punggol Town. This 2.4 kilometre is the first part of the 4.2km waterway to be constructed. The waterway, which will be connected to Sungei Punggol, averages a depth of about 4.0 metres and a width which varies from 10 metres to 85 metres. Construction of the waterway is scheduled to begin in February 2009 and complete by 4th Qtr 2010.
Residents in Punggol can look forward to enjoying various recreational activities, ranging from water sports to a leisurely walk along the landscaped promenade on both banks of the waterway.
HDB’s plans to launch the first sale site at the Town Centre for a mixed commercial and private residential development are also on track. This waterfront site is planned to be launched by 2010/2011, and when completed it will add greater vibrancy and vitality to the town. By end 2011, there will be about 23,000 completed flats in Punggol. In the longer term, another 21,000 dwelling units of public and private housing will be built along the waterway for residents to enjoy waterfront housing in Singapore’s latest town.
